Point of View: Setting an Intention for 55

There are bucket-list properties, and then there are the legendary ones that have sat on "Oprah’s Favorite Things" lists for decades. For my 55th birthday, I decided it was time to see if the hype around Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa was real. My Point of View on luxury travel has always been that the best stays provide a true mental reset. As a small business owner in e-commerce since 1996, the idea of a digital detox sounded like exactly what I needed.

Living in Utah, the hop from Salt Lake City to Tucson is a breeze, and coinciding with my birthday made this an ideal long-weekend destination. Miraval is an all-inclusive wellness retreat that prioritizes "mindfulness first, luxury second." While I was ready for mindfulness, the transition from "business mode" to a "digital device free" mode proved to be a bit of a learning curve.

The Low Point: Technical Hurdles

Even in paradise, there were some technical cons that felt a bit Pointless. First, the Wi-Fi in the rooms was sporadic. While the resort's philosophy encourages you to unplug, I still find it necessary to have a reliable connection for relaxing with Netflix in the evening. Expect some buffering if you try to stream.

Additionally, the booking system for activities is a bit clunky. Because I booked our stay using a mix of points and a certificate, we ended up with four different confirmation numbers for a two-night stay, two for each day. It was incredibly cumbersome to manage, and because the reservations were fragmented, the systems didn't always talk to each other. This led to a common Hyatt glitch where our room keys deactivated after the first night. While it was quickly fixed, it is a minor annoyance I would love to see streamlined. Ideally, they would implement digital kiosks where you could instantly book or swap classes rather than waiting in line at the event planning desk.

Booking Strategy: Trading for Maximum Value

One of the best parts of the Hyatt ecosystem is the outsized value you can find at Miraval, but it requires a strategic Point of View. Here is the breakdown:

  • Night 1: 72,000 World of Hyatt points (Double Occupancy).

  • Night 2: A "Buy One, Get One" Miraval Award.

  • The Hustle: While the BOGO award is a 100-night Milestone Reward, I traded some of my Guest of Honor awards with a friend to secure it.

  • The Math: We transferred Chase points to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio. Cash rates for our dates were $1,350 per night, plus a 23% resort fee (roughly $310/night). By booking with points, that fee is waived, saving us over $620 in hidden costs alone.

I generate these points primarily through my Chase Ink Business Preferred (3x on shipping) and Chase Ink Business Cash (5x on office supplies) for my business.

On Point: The "I Am" Experience

Miraval provides a complimentary hourly shuttle from the airport, about an hour's drive to the resort. Upon arrival, you strike a giant gong to set your intention for the stay. One of the best features is the strict no tipping policy. Employees receive extra compensation when their names are specifically called out in the review survey, which is a great way to reward service without constantly reaching for a wallet.

One unique tradition is the "I Am" name tag. You choose a word describing your intention for the stay; I chose Inquisitive and my wife chose Happy. The property also provides "Cell Phone Sleeping Bags", which are small pouches to keep your phone out of sight. It was hard for me to get used to, and I wasn't alone. I even saw another guy hiding in a corner of the men's locker room sending a flurry of texts. No judgment here; I get the struggle!

Dining at the Cactus Flower was a highlight. Since it is all-inclusive, you can technically order multiple appetizers or entrées if you're curious about the menu. We also used our $175 per person resort credit to bring our spa treatments down to just $80 per person.

The High Point: A Catalog of Discovery

The High Point of the trip was the variety of programming. Miraval operates on a packed schedule, and my Pro Tip is to book your classes weeks in advance. I didn't, and found many popular workshops full.

The classes fall into several "pillars":

  • Equine & Spirit: The equine program uses horses to mirror your communication style. There are also Crystal Alchemy Sound Journeys and Tarot Readings.

  • Adventure & Fitness: Guided hikes through the Santa Catalina Mountains and archery.

  • Culinary & Creative: Plant-based cooking workshops and "All the Buzz," which is an immersive beekeeping experience.

  • Court Sports: We took a Beginner’s Introduction to Pickleball, which was a fantastic way to stay active.

Final Point: The Verdict

My Final Point is that Miraval Arizona is an incredible use of points. The value of waiving that 23% resort fee and the all-inclusive nature of the stay makes it one of the strongest Hyatt redemptions available.

The Full Breakdown:

  • SLC ↔ TUS: Upgraded to First Class both ways via my wife’s Diamond Medallion status.

  • Miraval Night 1: 72,000 pts.

  • Miraval Night 2: BOGO Award (Traded).

  • Resort Fees/Parking/Food: $0 (All-inclusive/Globalist).

The verdict? This trip was On Point. I left feeling refreshed and already looking at my Chase point balance to see when I can make a return. Miraval rewards those who do the homework; start building those Hyatt and Chase balances now.
